Victorian North London properties were designed in an era before central heating, and as a result the heating systems installed in the late 20th century typically run through visible pipework — up and down walls, across floors, and through rooms in ways that were never planned architecturally. Deciding what to do with this pipework — and how to paint the radiators themselves — is a practical question for almost every NW3 and North London redecoration project.
Radiator Painting
Standard radiators are typically steel, sprayed with a polyester powder coat from the factory. This coating performs well when intact but becomes damaged by impacts and shows chips clearly. Repainting radiators requires the correct product: standard emulsion is not suitable for radiator surfaces (it softens when warm and peels). We specify Dulux Trade Satinwood or purpose-made radiator enamel — both rated for the continuous heat cycle of a domestic central heating system.
Pipe Painting Strategies
For exposed pipework, there are two main approaches: painting pipes the same colour as the wall to minimise their visual presence (effective when the pipes are against the wall and relatively small in diameter), or painting pipes in a contrasting colour to acknowledge them as a deliberate design element (popular in more industrial loft-style interiors). The same principle applies to radiators — paint them to match the wall to minimise, or in a contrasting colour to feature.
