Most of the homes we decorate in NW3 were built before 1919, which means lime plaster rather than gypsum and walls that need to stay vapour-permeable. Modern acrylic and vinyl emulsions trap moisture inside a solid wall, which is what causes blown plaster and paint that lifts within a couple of years, so we survey and test the substrate before we specify anything. Friable or powdery plaster is stabilised first, and where a wall has to keep breathing we use a breathable system such as Earthborn Claypaint (EU Ecolabel, zero VOC) or Graphenstone natural lime. Preparation is carried out with Mirka CEROS orbital sanders running into HEPA extraction, capturing 99.97% of the airborne dust at source, so most clients stay in the house while we work rather than moving out. For colour we specify Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Mylands and Dulux Heritage, and Earthborn where a zero-VOC finish matters — a nursery, or a household with allergy sufferers.
