Radiators are one of the most technically demanding surfaces in any NW3 interior to paint correctly — they expand and contract with heat cycles, accumulating layers of incompatible products over the years, and are very vulnerable to chipping and yellowing.
The Problem with Standard Paint on Radiators
Standard emulsion and eggshell on radiators will yellow and discolour with heat over time, and may fail to adhere to the slick radiator surface. The heat cycles cause expansion and contraction that cracks inflexible paint films. We never apply standard wall or wood paint to radiators in NW3 properties.
The Correct Approach
We use: Rustins Quick Dry Radiator Enamel, Zinsser AllCoat (on suitably primed metal), or Johnstone's Acrylic Radiator Enamel — all of which are formulated to withstand the thermal cycles radiators experience. For period-style column radiators in NW3 Victorian homes, we apply specially formulated radiator paint in heritage colours to match or complement the room scheme.
Cleaning and Preparation
Proper key-sanding with 240-grit, degreasing with tack cloth, and priming with a suitable metal primer are essential before any radiator paint is applied in NW3 properties. Poor preparation is the main cause of radiator paint failure — we have seen multiple NW3 properties where a previous decorator has applied emulsion directly to dirty radiator surfaces.
