The Best White Paints for Hampstead & North London Homes in 2026

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for The Best White Paints for Hampstead & North London Homes in 2026

White is not white. Walk through any decorating supplier in North London and you will encounter hundreds of whites — warm whites, cool whites, chalky whites, creamy whites, dirty whites, brilliant whites, and everything in between. Choosing the wrong one is one of the most common and costly decorating mistakes in London homes. Here's how to get it right.

Understanding White Undertones

Every white has an undertone — a subtle lean towards yellow (warm), pink (warm), blue (cool), or green (cool). In north-facing rooms, which are common in Hampstead's Victorian terraces, cool-toned whites read as very cold and slightly blue. In south-facing rooms, warm whites can look creamy and rich rather than cold. The room's orientation is the single most important factor in white selection.

Our Favourite Whites for North London Homes

Farrow & Ball Pointing (No. 2003): A warm, slightly creamy white that works in both north and south-facing rooms without reading as overly yellow. Probably the most versatile white in the range.

Little Greene Intelligent White: A clean, slightly warm white that photographs beautifully and works across the brightness range of typical London Victorian rooms.

Mylands Marfil: A subtle warm white with dusty undertones — almost a white limewash effect in low light. Gorgeous in period properties.

Farrow & Ball All White (No. 2005): For those who want a genuinely clean white without blue-grey undertones. Works well in south-facing rooms and on ceilings throughout.

Avoid: British Standard brilliant white — the stark, blue-toned white of most budget paints — reads as institutional in period properties and ages badly with a yellowish cast.
