Choosing paint colours that work harmoniously across an entire home, respond well to the specific light conditions of the rooms, and reflect the client's personal taste is genuinely skilled work. The internet is full of beautiful room photographs where the colour looks perfect — and then the same colour is applied in a different room with different light, different furnishings, and different proportions, and it looks completely wrong. Professional colour consultation short-circuits this problem.
What a Colour Consultation Involves
Our colour consultations begin with a site visit to assess the rooms — we look at the quality and direction of natural light at different times of day, the existing flooring and fixed elements (tiles, kitchen units, fireplace materials), any furniture or fixtures being retained, and the client's stated preferences. We then provide painted sample panels directly on the walls (not small sample cards) and review them over 24–48 hours in different lighting conditions before making a final recommendation.
Why Sample Cards Don't Work
Sample cards are useful as a starting point but should never be used to make a final colour decision. The small size, different paper substrate, and the fact that they're held up against a different background all mean the colour read you get from a sample card is unreliable. A painted sample patch of at least 50cm x 50cm on the actual wall is the only reliable way to assess a colour.
Our Approach
We include free colour guidance as part of all our projects. For clients decorating independently or who want a standalone service, we offer a two-hour colour consultation for a fixed fee, with our recommendations provided in writing with specific paint references for each room. We work with Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Mylands, and all major suppliers.
