Conservatory Painting Guide: Timber, UPVC & Metal Frames in North London Homes

Exterior decorating work on a North London property for Conservatory Painting Guide: Timber, UPVC & Metal Frames in North London Homes

Conservatories in North London's Victorian and Edwardian properties — and the newer lean-to and orangery additions that have become popular in recent years — require careful paint specification. The combination of sunlight exposure, rain, condensation from inside, and temperature fluctuations between summer and winter creates demanding conditions for any coating.

Timber Conservatory Frames

Original and reproduction timber conservatory frames are the most rewarding to redecorate, and the most demanding in terms of preparation. We start with a complete strip of any failing paint using heat gun or chemical stripper, treat any rot with Sikkens Cetol BL Repair consolidant, sand to a smooth key, apply two coats of oil-based primer, one undercoat, and two topcoats of either Farrow & Ball Full Gloss or Little Greene Intelligent Gloss. This six-coat system, properly applied, will last 7–10 years in North London conditions.

Painting UPVC Conservatory Frames

Many clients want to refresh or change the colour of their UPVC conservatory. This requires specialist adhesion primer (we use Johnstone's or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3) before any topcoat application. The topcoat should be a flexible, UV-resistant paint specifically formulated for UPVC or plastics — standard emulsion or gloss will crack, peel, and look terrible within one season. With the right system, UPVC can be repainted to an excellent standard in any RAL or standard colour.

Metal & Crittall-Style Frames

Steel and aluminium conservatory frames require thorough degreasing, wire brushing of any rust, application of a zinc-phosphate or epoxy primer, and a topcoat of two-pack polyurethane or specialist metal paint. We have extensive experience with original Crittall windows and the growing range of Crittall-style steel and aluminium frames being installed in contempory extensions throughout North London.

We paint conservatories and garden rooms across Hampstead, Highgate, Muswell Hill, Crouch End, and all North London postcodes. Call 020 3874 2670.
