The paint industry has changed enormously over the past two decades, driven partly by environmental regulation (EU regulations have progressively reduced the permitted VOC content of paint products) and partly by consumer demand for healthier homes. But the landscape is confusing: "eco" and "natural" are not regulated terms, and marketing claims are not always matched by the actual product formulation. Here's our honest assessment.
What are VOCs and Why Do They Matter?
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals that evaporate at room temperature, contributing to indoor air pollution. Traditional oil-based paints and gloss products are high-VOC; modern water-based products are generally lower. "Zero VOC" means below 5g/litre — genuinely very low and appropriate for use in nurseries, children's bedrooms, and homes with vulnerable occupants.

Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion: Low-sheen, high-pigment, and lower VOC than trade equivalents. Not zero-VOC but a responsible choice with exceptional aesthetics.
KEIM Mineral Paints: Mineral silicate paint with zero VOC and outstanding breathability and durability for exterior use. The most environmentally responsible exterior masonry coating available.
