Farrow & Ball's colour palette is one of the most discussed topics in North London's property and interior design world. Year after year, certain shades rise to prominence — specified repeatedly by interior designers, chosen by homeowners embarking on renovations, and setting the tone for the premium end of the property market. Based on our experience applying Farrow & Ball paints across Hampstead, Highgate, Muswell Hill, and the surrounding area in 2025 and into 2026, here are the trends we are seeing.
The Shift from Pale to Depth
The dominance of pale, off-white neutrals that characterised North London interiors for much of the 2010s and early 2020s has been significantly qualified by a move toward deeper, richer tones. Homeowners who painted everything Elephant's Breath and Cornforth White a decade ago are now frequently choosing much stronger colours for at least one room — and often throughout the house. This is the most significant trend we are observing.
The Most Specified Farrow & Ball Colours in 2025–2026
Downpipe (No. 26)
Downpipe — a dark charcoal-blue-grey — has become one of the most popular colours in North London interiors. Used on kitchen cabinetry, feature walls, studies, and increasingly on front doors, its depth and sophistication suit the high-ceilinged rooms of Victorian and Edwardian houses beautifully. It works equally well with aged oak floors and polished concrete.
Railings (No. 31)
Railings is a near-black with a subtle green-grey undertone — often described as the classic London front door colour. It is increasingly being used inside on joinery, cabinetry, and feature walls, particularly in studies and libraries.
Inchyra Blue (No. 289)
A deep, slightly greyed teal that has become a signature colour for sitting rooms and bedrooms in North London's period properties. Its complex, shifting quality works beautifully in rooms that receive changing natural light throughout the day.
De Nimes (No. 299)
A washed-out denim blue that sits in the gap between pale and mid-tone — versatile, gentle, and particularly effective in bedrooms and bathrooms. Among the most frequently specified colours in 2026 for these rooms.
Elephant's Breath (No. 229) — Still Going Strong
Despite the move toward deeper tones, Elephant's Breath remains the most reliably chosen neutral in the North London market. Its warm-cool balance and subtle complexity remain difficult to improve upon for hallways, open-plan living spaces, and rooms that must work with multiple furniture styles.
Using These Colours Well
The key to using bold Farrow & Ball colours successfully in period properties is context. A deep Inchyra Blue on all four walls of a small bedroom will feel oppressive; on three walls with a lighter ceiling and matching woodwork it will feel cocooning and beautiful. Understanding scale, light, and proportion is the difference between a colour trend applied well and applied badly.
