If you are dealing with damp or stained walls in a West Hampstead home, do not jump straight to another coat of emulsion. Around West End Lane, Sumatra Road and Lymington Road, the cause is often fabric-related, not cosmetic.
Why this is common in NW6
Victorian Terraces And Conversion Flats frequently show the effects of age, previous overpainting and London moisture cycles. Penetrating Damp, Condensation Or Historic Salts.
Correct order of work
Stop The Moisture Source First, Then Use Appropriate Stain-blocking And Breathable Systems. Skipping diagnosis is how West Hampstead residents pay twice — once for a quick repaint, then again when the same defect returns.
Resident checklist before calling a decorator
- Photograph the defect in daylight and note whether it worsens after rain or cooking/steam
- Check gutters, window reveals, vents and extractors if moisture may be involved
- Collect any previous paint brand details if known
- Ask for a written method, not only a colour quote
Prevention tips for West Hampstead homes
Keep ventilation working, avoid impermeable coatings on unsuitable historic fabric, and schedule joinery maintenance before paint failure spreads. On exterior-facing walls near West End Lane, Sumatra Road and Lymington Road, weather exposure can accelerate defects if maintenance is deferred.
