Painting Your Home Office in North London: Colours That Aid Focus & Productivity

Home offices are now a fixed feature of North London properties — the shift to hybrid working since 2020 has meant that a dedicated, well-presented workspace is now a genuine requirement rather than a luxury. The colour scheme of a home office should support focus and sustained concentration while also providing an appropriate background for video calls.

Research on Colour and Productivity

Environmental psychology research consistently finds that mid-intensity colours — neither too pale (which can feel bland and mentally unstimulating) nor too saturated (which can be fatiguing over a full working day) — tend to support sustained concentration best. Blue tones are associated with clarity and focus; green tones with calm and concentration; warm neutrals with comfort and stability. This research aligns with the colour choices we see most effectively used in high-performing home offices in NW3.

Video Call Backgrounds

An increasingly important consideration for home office decoration is how the room looks on video calls. Pale walls photograph well but can feel bland; mid-toned colours (a sage green, a warm grey, a dusty blue) read beautifully on camera and communicate taste and seriousness. Avoid very dark backgrounds in dark rooms — the camera exposure compensation tends to flatten your image.

Our Recommended Home Office Colours

Farrow & Ball Mizzle (a muted sage), Pigeon (a complex grey-blue-green), and Purbeck Stone (a sophisticated warm grey) are three of our most frequently specified home office colours in NW3 properties. All photograph well, feel professional without being corporate, and create a pleasant environment to work in for extended periods.
