How Long Does It Take to Paint a 4-Bed House in Hampstead?

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for How Long Does It Take to Paint a 4-Bed House in Hampstead?

One of the most common questions we receive from Hampstead homeowners is how long their painting project will take. For a four-bedroom house in NW3, the answer depends on several factors — but here is a realistic guide based on our extensive experience decorating properties across Hampstead.

Typical Timelines for a Full Interior Repaint

A complete interior repaint of a four-bedroom Victorian or Edwardian house in Hampstead typically takes three to four weeks with a team of two professional painters. This includes all bedrooms, reception rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, hallways, and staircases. If the property is in good condition with minimal preparation needed, it can sometimes be completed in two and a half weeks. If extensive filling, lining, or damp treatment is required, allow up to five weeks.

Properties on streets such as Frognal, Redington Road, and Arkwright Road tend to have larger rooms and higher ceilings than average, which extends the timeline. A house on Frognal with four-metre ceilings will take longer than a similar-sized house on a street with standard ceiling heights.

What Affects the Timeline

Surface condition is the biggest variable. A newly plastered room can be primed and painted in two to three days. A room with cracked plaster, flaking paint, and damp staining may need a week of preparation before any colour goes on the walls. Period properties in NW3 often have layers of old paint that need careful preparation — we have found up to 20 layers of paint on sash windows in some Hampstead homes.

Colour choices also matter. Painting a room white over white is straightforward. Changing from a dark colour to a light one, or applying deep colours like Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, requires additional coats and therefore additional time.

How to Plan Your Project

We recommend booking your painting project at least four to six weeks in advance, particularly during the busy spring and autumn seasons. To minimise disruption, we typically work room by room, allowing you to continue living in your Hampstead home throughout the project. Each room is cleared of furniture, protected with dust sheets, prepared, painted, and handed back before we move to the next.

For a personalised timeline and quotation for your four-bedroom Hampstead home, call us on 020 3874 2670. We will visit your NW3 property, assess the condition of every room, and provide a detailed schedule so you know exactly what to expect.
