One of the most common questions we are asked by homeowners across Hampstead, Highgate, and North London is: how many coats of paint does a room actually need? The short answer is that it depends — on the surface, the paint being used, the colour change, and whether you are working on new plaster or previously painted walls. Here is the complete professional guide.
Walls: New Plaster
Freshly plastered walls require a mist coat before any emulsion is applied. A mist coat is neat emulsion diluted approximately 80:20 (paint to water) that seals the porous plaster surface, preventing subsequent coats from being sucked in unevenly. Without a mist coat, even premium emulsions like Farrow & Ball Estate or Little Greene Absolute Matt will leave an uneven, patchy finish.
After the mist coat has dried fully (at least 24 hours), two full coats of emulsion are applied. That is three coats in total for new plaster: one mist coat plus two finish coats. This is non-negotiable if you want a professional result.
Walls: Previously Painted Surfaces
On previously painted walls in good condition — properly prepared, no flaking, and a stable existing finish — two coats of emulsion are typically sufficient for most colour changes. However, there are important exceptions:
- Dark to light: Going from a dark colour (deep navy, forest green, charcoal) to a pale colour can require three or even four coats to fully obliterate the underlying shade. A coat of stain-blocking primer can help.
- Very porous or patched surfaces: If walls have been extensively filled and patched, the repaired areas will absorb more paint than surrounding areas. A spot-prime on patches before the finish coats prevents uneven sheen.
- Premium high-pigment paints: Quality paints such as Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, and Edward Bulmer typically offer better coverage per coat, sometimes achieving full coverage in two coats where cheaper paints would need three.
Ceilings
Ceilings generally need two coats of ceiling paint or white emulsion. If working from a previously painted ceiling, one coat may suffice for a like-for-like repaint, but two coats always produces a more even, uniform result — particularly under raking light or bright daylight, which shows up any variation in sheen.
Woodwork: Skirting, Door Frames, and Doors
Woodwork requires the most coats of any painted surface in a room. For a professional finish on skirting boards, architraves, door frames, and panelled doors:
- One coat of primer (oil-based primer for bare or previously oil-painted wood; water-based for previously water-based painted surfaces)
- One coat of undercoat
- Two coats of finish — either eggshell (our recommendation for most North London homes) or gloss
That is four coats for woodwork in good condition. For bare new timber or heavily stripped woodwork, an additional knotting treatment and extra primer coat may be needed, making five coats in total.
Kitchen Cabinets
Kitchen cabinet painting requires the most preparation and the most coats of all interior painting work. Cabinets need to be degreased, lightly abraded, primed with an appropriate adhesion primer, and then painted with two to three coats of specialist cabinet paint or eggshell, usually applied by spray for a flawless finish. Rushing the coat count on cabinets leads to poor adhesion and peeling within months.
The Cost of Cutting Corners
In Hampstead and Highgate, we frequently repaint work done by previous decorators who applied a single coat of cheap emulsion and called it done. The result — uneven coverage, visible brushmarks, and paint that scuffs and wears within months — costs more to rectify than the original job should have cost to do properly. Investing in the right number of coats with quality paint is always the most economical choice long-term.
