One of the most important decisions in any painting project is the choice of finish. Matt, eggshell, satin, silk, and gloss refer to the sheen level of the dried paint — and the right choice makes a significant difference to how a room looks, how it feels to live in, and how easy it is to maintain. Here is a professional guide to choosing the right finish for every surface in your North London home.
Understanding Sheen Levels
Paint finishes are categorised by their level of light reflectance. From lowest to highest sheen: flat or dead matt > matt > soft sheen > eggshell > satin > semi-gloss > gloss. Higher sheen levels reflect more light, making colours appear slightly lighter and brighter. They are also generally more washable and durable, though this generalisation has important exceptions as paint technology improves.
Matt Finish
Matt emulsion is the most popular choice for walls and ceilings in period properties across Hampstead, Highgate, and Muswell Hill. A true matt or dead matt finish — such as Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion or Little Greene Absolute Matt — absorbs light rather than reflecting it, giving colours exceptional depth and richness. High-pigment matt paints also hide minor surface irregularities better than any other finish, making them ideal for the slightly textured lime plaster walls common in Victorian and Edwardian properties.
The limitation of traditional matt paint is durability — it cannot be scrubbed clean as readily as higher-sheen finishes. However, premium matt paints like Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion are significantly more durable than cheap matt emulsions, and modern innovations like Dulux Easycare Matt offer washable matt finishes for family homes.
Eggshell Finish
Eggshell is the standard professional choice for interior woodwork — skirting boards, door frames, panelled doors, window frames, and radiators. It has a low but definite sheen (approximately 20–30% reflectance) that adds a subtle liveliness to painted surfaces while remaining significantly less harsh than gloss. It is more durable and washable than matt, and hides brush marks better than high-gloss finishes.
We use eggshell on woodwork throughout Hampstead and Highgate properties and consider it the ideal balance of aesthetic quality and practical performance. Farrow & Ball Estate Eggshell and Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell are our most frequently specified products.
Eggshell is also used on walls in high-use areas — kitchens, hallways, children's rooms — where the additional washability compensates for the slightly less rich appearance compared to matt.
Satin and Silk Finish
Satin finishes sit between eggshell and gloss, with a noticeably higher sheen that reflects significant light. Satin is often used on interior woodwork where a shinier result is desired without full gloss — on contemporary kitchens or bathrooms, for instance. It is highly durable and easy to clean. On walls, satin-finish emulsions (often marketed as silk) are popular for bathrooms and kitchens where moisture resistance is a priority, though their higher sheen shows surface imperfections more readily than matt.
Gloss Finish
Traditional high-gloss paint — usually oil-based — has fallen from fashion for interior woodwork in most North London homes. Its very high sheen (60–80% reflectance) accentuates every brush mark and surface imperfection, and on the slightly irregular timber surfaces typical of Victorian doors and skirting boards, a gloss finish rarely looks as good as eggshell. We still use gloss on front doors (where its toughness and weather resistance are genuine advantages), on ironwork, and occasionally on architectural detail where a high-sheen dramatic effect is specifically desired.
