Limewash Decorators in Hampstead NW3 — Traditional Breathable Coatings

Limewash is a calcium hydroxide-based paint that has been used on buildings for thousands of years. In Hampstead NW3, it remains the historically and technically correct coating for pre-1919 properties with lime-plastered walls and solid masonry construction.

Why Solid Wall Properties Need Breathable Paint

Houses built before 1919 — which constitutes most of Hampstead's Victorian and Edwardian housing stock — have solid masonry walls without a damp-proof course. These buildings are designed to absorb and release moisture through the wall itself. Modern vinyl or acrylic paints seal the wall surface and prevent this moisture movement, trapping water inside the wall and causing damp, mould, and eventually structural damage.

The Qualities of Limewash

Limewash is highly vapour-permeable, naturally alkaline (inhibiting mould and bacterial growth), self-healing through carbonation, and produces a beautiful, matte, slightly luminous finish that ages gracefully. It is also entirely non-toxic and zero-VOC.

Application in Hampstead

Limewash application is more complex than modern paint. It must be applied in thin, dilute coats (5–10 coats is typical) with a wide, natural fibre brush. The substrate must be lime plaster or lime render — it will not adhere to gypsum plaster or modern renders. Our heritage decorators in NW3 complete a substrate assessment before specifying any limewash project.
