The fireplace is the architectural centrepiece of the Victorian reception room — the focal point around which the rest of the room's decoration is organised. Many North London properties retain their original Victorian fireplace surrounds in marble, slate, cast iron, or timber, and the wall decoration scheme must either support or contrast with these existing elements to create a coherent room.
Working with Marble Surrounds
The most prestigious Victorian fireplace surrounds are in Carrara or Sicilian marble — typically white or cream with grey veining. The cool tones of marble are complemented by warm wall colours (ochres, soft pinks, warm greens) rather than cool colours that simply echo the stone. White woodwork with warm wall colours creates a classic Victorian scheme that suits marble fireplaces beautifully.
Painted Timber Surrounds
Many Victorian fireplace surrounds are timber — often quite elaborate joinery with pilasters, overmantels, and carved or applied decoration. These are typically painted white, cream, or the same colour as the surrounding woodwork. In some contemporary schemes, timber surrounds are painted to match the wall colour (for a more understated, enveloping effect) or in a contrasting accent colour for emphasis. We are often asked to repaint fireplace surrounds in new colours as part of a wider room redecoration.
Chimney Breast as Feature Wall
The chimney breast wall is the most popular feature wall location in Victorian North London rooms — given its natural prominence as the focal point of the room, painting it in a contrasting or deeper tone to the return walls creates an obvious and effective colour hierarchy. This is the most common of the several approaches we execute in NW3 reception rooms.
