Painting Dark Walls: How to Pull Off Deep Colours in North London Homes

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Painting Dark Walls: How to Pull Off Deep Colours in North London Homes

The past decade has seen an explosion of interest in dark, dramatic wall colours — Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, Railings, Down Pipe, and Pelt have become some of the most sought-after shades on the North London decorating circuit. And for good reason: in the right space, a deep colour transforms a room from pleasant to unforgettable. But dark walls done badly look patchy, oppressive, and expensive to fix. Here's how to do them right.

Where Dark Colours Work Best

Deep colours generally work best in rooms with adequate natural light, high ceilings, and architectural interest to anchor the drama — exactly the conditions found in Hampstead, Highgate, and Muswell Hill Victorian reception rooms. A dark colour in a low-ceilinged, north-facing box room will usually feel claustrophobic; the same colour in a double-height double reception can be magnificent.

The Preparation Challenge

Dark colours are less forgiving than pale ones — every surface imperfection, missed patch, and brush mark shows. Preparation for dark walls must be thorough: all holes and cracks filled flush, surfaces sanded smooth, and a tinted primer applied in a tone sympathetic to the chosen colour before any finish coats. Using a mid-grey primer under Hague Blue dramatically reduces the number of topcoats needed and produces a deeper, more even result.

How Many Coats?

Most deep colours require three or four finish coats on previously pale or unpainted walls. Any fewer and you'll see holidays (missed areas) and uneven coverage, particularly in raking light. A professional decorator will apply as many coats as needed for a uniform, solid result — we never rush this stage.

We have extensive experience with deep, dramatic colour schemes across NW3, N6, and North London. Call 020 3874 2670 for a colour consultation and quote.
