Decorating Georgian & Regency Mansion Flats in North London: Scale, Proportion & Palette

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Decorating Georgian & Regency Mansion Flats in North London: Scale, Proportion & Palette

The finest apartments in North London are found in the Georgian and Regency mansion blocks around Regent's Park and in the converted period townhouses of NW3, NW8, and NW1 — generous-proportioned flats with high ceilings, original cornicing, sash windows, and the formal architectural vocabulary of the early 19th century. Decorating these properties correctly is a particular specialisation — the scale and proportions of Georgian interiors require a different approach from the Victorian terrace.

The Georgian Palette

Authentic Georgian interiors were painted in a more limited and more saturated palette than their Victorian successors — bold stone tones (Portland, Bath, and Derbyshire stones) for principal rooms, deep Prussian blue for studies and libraries, and relatively high-contrast schemes of pale ceilings against mid-toned walls that emphasised the architectural precision of the rooms. For modern clients, these can be referenced rather than replicated: Little Greene's Georgian range and Farrow & Ball's similarly sourced historic colours give access to the palette without requiring strict historical accuracy.

The Importance of Cornicing in Georgian Rooms

Georgian cornicing — typically in classical egg-and-dart or dentil profiles, precisely executed — is one of the most significant architectural features of any Georgian interior. It must be carefully preserved, repaired if necessary, and painted with the precision that the profiles demand. We never fill Georgian cornicing profiles by rolling paint into them — this destroys the precision of the detail and is one of the most damaging things a decorator can do to a Georgian interior.
