Painting Kitchen Cabinets in North London: Spray Painting vs Brush and Roller

By Sarah Chen5 May 20267 min read
Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Painting Kitchen Cabinets in North London: Spray Painting vs Brush and Roller

Painting existing kitchen cabinets — rather than replacing them — is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh a tired kitchen. A good quality cabinet paint job on well-prepared doors and carcasses, in a carefully chosen colour, can transform a 1990s pine kitchen or an early 2000s MDF kitchen into something that looks entirely contemporary. Here's the specification that will give you a durable, professional result.

The Spray Painting Advantage

Spray painting kitchen cabinets produces a dramatically superior surface to brush-and-roller work — particularly on flat-panel doors. A spray-applied finish shows no brush marks and no roller stipple; it builds up in even, consistent layers and produces the equivalent of a factory-sprayed finish. We spray-paint kitchen cabinets in our workshop or in situ using an HVLP system with appropriate masking, allowing each coat to cure fully between applications.

The Correct Preparation

Good cabinet painting begins with correct preparation: degrease thoroughly (kitchen cabinet surfaces carry oil, finger grease, and cooking residue that must be removed), sand to a key, prime with an adhesion primer appropriate to the substrate (MDF, solid wood, and previously-painted surfaces each have the most appropriate primer type), and apply a minimum of two finish coats. We typically use Dulux Trade Satinwood or Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell on kitchen cabinets — both have excellent durability in kitchen environments.
