Painting Staircases, Banisters & Handrails in North London Victorian Homes

The staircase in a Victorian terrace — with its turned spindles, moulded handrail, newel posts, and panelled risers — is both a beautiful piece of architectural detail and one of the most technically demanding surfaces to repaint well. Done correctly, it transforms the entrance hall and first impression of the home; done badly, runs, missed spindles, and drips are visible every day.

Preparation: The Critical Phase

Staircase spindles and balusters must be fully prepared before any coating is applied. This means stripping any paint that is flaking or failing (often multiple layers of old gloss on Victorian staircases), filling any damaged sections, and sanding all surfaces. The handrail — particularly if pitch pine or softwood — may require careful grain filling to achieve a smooth finish. Missing preparation shortcut will show through every subsequent coat.

Product Selection

For staircase spindles and risers, we use oil-based eggshell or satin for durability and a premium finish. Farrow & Ball Estate Eggshell handles spindles beautifully but requires careful application to avoid sags. An alternative is Ronseal One Coat Gloss for spindle work if budget is a consideration — excellent adhesion and durability at lower cost. Handrails are best left as natural timber (oiled or varnished with Osmo Polyx) rather than painted, as painted handrails show wear from daily use much faster.

The Best Colour Combinations

In North London Victorian homes, the most common and successful staircase colour scheme is: spindles in white (Farrow & Ball All White or Pointing), handrail in natural oiled timber, risers in white to match the spindles, and treads in natural varnished timber or painted in a mid-dark stair paint. The newel posts are typically painted to match the spindles or picked out in a complementary darker tone.

We specialise in Victorian staircase decoration throughout Hampstead, Highgate, and North London. Call 020 3874 2670 for a detailed quote.
