The staircase of a Victorian North London terrace is often the most architecturally significant interior element after the reception room — a continuous sweeping flight from hall to landing with turned spindles, substantial newel posts, bracketed risers, and a shaped handrail. Decorating it well transforms the entire experience of moving through the house.
The Decision: Paint or Natural Wood?
The most consequential staircase decoration decision is whether to paint the joinery or reveal the natural timber beneath. In most Victorian properties, the staircase was originally painted — most Victorian pine was never intended to be seen unpainted, and the grain is typically not of a quality that would be chosen for visible timber today. However, where the timber is in good condition and well-figured, stripping and waxing or oiling is a beautiful option. We always assess the timber quality before advising on this choice.
Painting Spindles Efficiently
Turned spindles are the most time-consuming element to paint — there are typically 30–50 per standard Victorian flight, each requiring careful cutting-in brush work along the turned profiles. We use a combination of small foam roller for the straight faces and a very fine pointed brush for the turned profiles — achieving full coverage without the ugly bridging of paint across profile recesses that reveals amateur work.
Treads and Risers
Stair treads require a paint formulation rated for floor use — we specify Dulux Trade Floor Paint or Johnstone's Floor Paint on treads, which provides adequate hardness for footwear traffic. Risers can be painted with standard eggshell. The choice of treads-same-as-walls or treads-natural-wood in a painted staircase is a major aesthetic decision that we always discuss with clients before beginning.
