Painting Timber Floors in North London Victorian Properties: A Practical Guide

By James Wilson6 May 20266 min read
Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Painting Timber Floors in North London Victorian Properties: A Practical Guide

Painted timber floors have been enjoying a sustained revival in North London period properties — both as a practical solution for original Victorian boards that are too varied and patchy for a natural finish, and as a deliberate aesthetic choice in contemporary interiors. The right specification and product selection produces a floor that looks beautiful and stands up to normal domestic traffic.

Floor Paint vs Eggshell on Floors

The most important product decision for painted floors is using a product rated for floor use rather than a standard wall eggshell. Floor paints (Dulux Trade Floor Paint, Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell used as a floor paint per their own guidance, or specialist floor products such as Zoffany Floor) have significantly higher hardness ratings than wall eggshells and resist foot traffic without scuffing. Standard wall eggshell on a floor will begin to show wear within weeks and require constant maintenance.

Preparation of Victorian Floorboards

Original Victorian pine floorboards typically have filled gaps from previous decoration, surface contamination from years of polish and grime, and uneven planing from repeated sanding. We prepare floorboards by cleaning back to bare timber (belt sanding for large areas, detail sanding at edges and corners), filling all gaps with a flexible caulk or matchstick-and-glue technique, and applying a wood primer before the first floor paint coat.
