Polished Plaster & Venetian Plaster in North London Homes: What's Involved

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Polished Plaster & Venetian Plaster in North London Homes: What's Involved

Polished plaster — broadly encompassing formulations including traditional Venetian plaster (marmorino), Tadelakt, and a range of modern proprietary variants — has become one of the most sought-after specialist finishes in premium North London interior projects. The appeal is a surface that has depth, movement, and visual interest impossible to achieve with standard paint coatings, and a physical quality that looks genuinely luxurious rather than simulated.

What Polished Plaster Is

Traditional polished plasters are lime-based formulations containing fine marble dust or aggregate, applied in multiple thin layers and burnished with a flat steel trowel to create a smooth, light-reflective, occasionally translucent surface. Venetian plaster (marmorino) mimics the appearance of polished marble; Tadelakt is a Moroccan lime plaster with a beautiful waterproof quality that makes it ideal for bathrooms and wet rooms. Modern proprietary variants (such as Tierrafino, Beal Stucco, and similar) make these effects more achievable in a UK decorating context.

When Polished Plaster Is Right

Polished plaster is an investment — significantly more expensive than painted walls — and works best where the surface will be seen and appreciated in good light. Reception rooms, hallways, bathrooms (Tadelakt specifically), and accent walls in principal bedrooms are the most appropriate applications. It is not appropriate over poor or damaged substrates — the finish requires perfectly flat, stable plaster as its base.

Our Application Process

We apply polished plaster finishes using trained specialist applicators — this is not a standard decorator skill, and the quality of the result depends entirely on the experience of the person applying it. We use premium formulations and apply a minimum of three coats, burnishing between each layer, to achieve the depth and movement that makes these finishes special.
