Repainting Old Gloss Woodwork in North London Period Homes: How to Get It Right

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Repainting Old Gloss Woodwork in North London Period Homes: How to Get It Right

Victorian North London properties typically have original or early 20th-century joinery — skirting boards, architraves, window frames, panelled doors, and picture rails — that has been repeatedly painted over many decades. The typical surface condition is multiple layers of old oil-based gloss, often including layers of lead paint on the oldest properties, in varying conditions of adhesion and surface quality. Getting from this starting point to a smooth, premium eggshell finish is one of the most technically demanding standard decorating challenges.

The Assessment Phase

Before deciding on a preparation approach, we assess the existing coatings: is the existing paint adhering firmly to the substrate, or are there sections that are flaking, lifting, or cracking? Is there lead paint present (likely if the property pre-dates 1970 and has never been stripped)? How thick is the existing paint build-up, and are there moulding profiles buried under multiple paint layers? These factors determine whether spot preparation is sufficient, or whether full stripping is required.

Spot Preparation

For woodwork in good overall condition with localised failings, we strip only the failing sections, prime the bare wood, and then use a flexible decorator's caulk (Evo-Stik White Decorating Caulk) to fill any fine cracks and surface irregularities before sanding back the full length of each board. This is the most common approach for Victorian terraces where the paint history is mostly sound.

Full Stripping

Where woodwork has excessive paint build-up that is obscuring moulding profiles, or large areas of failing/lifting paint, we strip back to bare timber using a combination of heat gun and scraper, hand plane the profiles, and start fresh with the full primer/undercoat/topcoat system. This is more expensive but the only way to produce a truly high-quality result where the substrate requires it.
