The ornate plaster cornicing in Victorian and Edwardian North London properties is one of the most valued architectural features in the area — and also one of the most frequently damaged, compromised, or inappropriately filled-over during insensitive 20th-century renovation work. Restoring and correctly painting period cornicing is a specialist task that requires real skill.
Assessing the Condition of Existing Cornicing
Cornicing problems fall into several categories: surface cracks (hairline movement cracks across the face of the moulding), structural failures (sections that have come away from the wall or ceiling and are only held by accumulated paint), missing sections (removed in renovation or damaged), and obscured detail (buried under many coats of paint that have softened or eliminated the precision of the original moulded profiles).
Repairing Failing Sections
For cornicing sections that have come away from the substrate, we carefully re-fix using cornice adhesive or appropriate plaster. Stable but cracked sections are carefully filled with fine fibrous plaster filler, avoiding overfilling that would blunt the moulding profiles. Missing sections can typically be matched and cast using original sections as a template — specialist plaster suppliers can supply or commission matching lengths for most Victorian profile types.
The Painting Process
After restoration, the cornicing surface is lightly sanded to key old paint layers, then painted with a fine-nap mini roller for the larger flat areas and a high-quality cutting-in brush for the fine profiles and recesses. The painting of cornicing is one of the operations that most clearly reveals the difference in skill between professional and amateur decorators — sharp definition between wall colour and cornice white requires a steady hand and an excellent brush.
