West Hampstead's Edwardian Terraces: A Decorator's Guide

Townhouse interior showcasing premium decorating detail for West Hampstead's Edwardian Terraces: A Decorator's Guide

West Hampstead's Edwardian terraces are among the most attractive residential properties in NW6. Built between 1900 and 1914 on streets like Mill Lane, Crediton Hill, Narcissus Road, and Pandora Road, these houses represent the pinnacle of Edwardian domestic architecture — lighter, airier, and more refined than their Victorian predecessors. Decorating them well means understanding and enhancing their distinctive character.

What Makes Edwardian Terraces Different

Edwardian terraces in West Hampstead differ from Victorian properties in several important ways that affect decoration. Rooms are generally wider and lighter, with larger windows that admit more natural light. Ceiling heights are typically 2.8 to 3 metres — generous but not as towering as high Victorian. The architectural details are more restrained: simpler cornicing, cleaner skirting profiles, and Art Nouveau-influenced stained glass rather than heavy Gothic ornament.

Many Edwardian terraces in NW6 retain their original features to a remarkable degree. Decorative tiles in porches and hallways, picture rails with plate shelves above, built-in window seats, and turned wooden balusters are common survivors. The best decorating approach highlights these features rather than hiding them.

Appropriate Colour Palettes

Edwardian interiors were originally decorated in softer, lighter colours than their Victorian predecessors. Pale greens, soft creams, dusty roses, and light blues were popular in the Edwardian era, and these shades still work beautifully in West Hampstead's Edwardian terraces. Little Greene has an excellent Edwardian colour palette that includes shades like Bone China Blue, Ashes of Roses, and Aquamarine — all historically appropriate and available in modern formulations.

Farrow & Ball colours that suit Edwardian terraces in NW6 include Light Blue (No. 22), Middleton Pink (No. 245), Green Smoke (No. 47), and Mizzle (No. 266). These softer, more complex colours complement the lighter, more graceful character of Edwardian architecture.

Restoring Original Features

If your West Hampstead Edwardian terrace has original features that have been painted over or neglected, a decorating project is the perfect opportunity to restore them. We carefully strip and repaint original skirting boards to reveal their clean, squared profiles. Picture rails are stripped back and repainted in a contrasting colour — traditionally a shade darker than the wall — to create the characteristic Edwardian banding effect.

Original stained glass panels in front doors and fanlights should be cleaned and highlighted, not obscured. We mask carefully around these features and can recommend specialist glass restorers in NW6 if panels are damaged.

External Decoration of Edwardian Terraces

Externally, Edwardian terraces in West Hampstead typically feature red or London stock brick with rendered elements around bays, porches, and upper storeys. The rendered sections need regular painting, while the brickwork should generally be left unpainted. We paint rendered sections in traditional cream or white tones and pick out window frames, door frames, and timber details in heritage colours.

For the original front doors of West Hampstead's Edwardian terraces, deep, rich colours work best. Farrow & Ball Studio Green, Preference Red, or Little Greene Invisible Green complement the warm tones of Edwardian brickwork and the colourful stained glass panels above.
