Colour for Low and Sloped Ceilings

Sloped ceilings in loft conversions present a specific choice: should the sloped plane be treated as a ceiling (painted pale) or as a wall (painted in wall colour)? Both approaches have their advocates, but in smaller loft conversions we generally recommend painting the entire sloping and non-sloping ceiling surface in the same pale colour to avoid visually dividing the already compact space. In larger mansard loft extensions with adequate ceiling height, wall colour continuing up the sloped knee wall can be very effective.

Pale, warm wall colours maximise the effect of the daylight — bright white can be harsh in direct skylight, while warmer whites (Clunch, Pointing) create a more comfortable and flattering ambient light.
