Heritage Paint Brands Compared — Farrow & Ball vs Little Greene vs Mylands vs Earthborn

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Heritage Paint Brands Compared — Farrow & Ball vs Little Greene vs Mylands vs Earthborn

Heritage paint brands are not interchangeable — each has distinct characteristics, strengths, and ideal applications. As decorators who work with Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Mylands, and Earthborn daily across NW3, we can give an honest, experience-based assessment.

Farrow & Ball

Strengths: extraordinary colour depth and sophistication; the most recognised premium brand (important for sale properties); excellent chalky flat finish in Estate Emulsion. Weaknesses: requires very precise application technique; Estate Emulsion marks more easily than competitive products; limited to 132 colours; premium price.

Little Greene

Strengths: broader colour range than Farrow & Ball (over 200 colours); Absolute Matt Emulsion has incredible pigment depth; Intelligent Eggshell is among the finest woodwork paints available; slightly more forgiving to apply. Weaknesses: less widely recognised by buyers (though this is changing); similar premium price point.

Mylands

Strengths: 811 colours — by far the widest heritage range; extraordinary quality trade eggshell; good commercial range. Weaknesses: less well known to homeowners (more a decorator's brand); showroom presence is more limited in North London.

Earthborn Claypaint

Strengths: the safest available paint for children and sensitive environments; extraordinary eco credentials; beautiful chalky texture. Weaknesses: limited to 52 colours; slightly less hard-wearing than competition; less suited to woodwork.
