Loft conversions are one of the most popular home improvements in Hampstead NW3 — adding a bedroom, bathroom, and valuable floor space to period houses without the planning complications of rear extensions. Getting the decoration right at the outset sets the tone for the entire room.
New Plasterboard — Special Considerations
Loft conversion walls and sloped ceilings are typically plasterboard and skim plaster — very different from the original lime plaster in the rest of the NW3 property. New plasterboard requires a mist coat (highly diluted emulsion) as a first coat to seal and bind the surface before full coats are applied. Skipping this step leads to poor adhesion and patchy finish.
Low Beams and Sloped Ceilings
The sloped ceilings and exposed timber structures in loft conversions create an intimate, characterful space. We paint exposed structural beams in either the same colour as the walls (for a calm, coherent look) or in a contrasting colour — typically a darker tone on beams against pale walls, or vice versa.
Colour Choices for Loft Rooms
For master bedroom loft conversions in NW3, we frequently use deep, rich tones that embrace the intimacy of the sloped ceiling — Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, Railings, or Pelt; Little Greene Obsidian Green. For en-suite bathrooms within the loft, mould-resistant Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion works well.
