Maida Vale's mansion flats are among the most sought-after apartments in West London. Built between 1895 and 1935, these substantial W9 buildings line Elgin Avenue, Castellain Road, Randolph Avenue, Lauderdale Road, and Delaware Road, offering spacious living with period character. Painting and decorating these flats requires understanding their specific challenges — high ceilings, solid plaster walls, extensive woodwork, and the expectations of discerning W9 residents.
Interior Painting Approach
Each mansion flat project begins with a thorough assessment of surfaces. We check for plaster cracks (common around ceiling roses and cornicing), test for previous oil-based paints on woodwork, and inspect for damp issues — particularly in ground-floor and basement flats along Sutherland Avenue and Warwick Avenue. Walls are prepared with appropriate fillers, sanded smooth, and primed before receiving two coats of Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion or Little Greene Absolute Matt in the client's chosen colour.
Woodwork and Period Features
W9 mansion flats typically have substantial skirting boards, architraves, panelled doors, and picture rails — all requiring careful preparation and painting. We sand and prime every timber surface before applying two coats of eggshell finish. Farrow & Ball Estate Eggshell and Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell are our standard recommendations, offering a soft sheen that complements the period character without the harshness of traditional gloss.
Colours That Work in Mansion Flats
The generous proportions and good natural light of most W9 mansion flats mean you can use richer, deeper colours than in smaller modern apartments. Farrow & Ball Hague Blue, Stiffkey Blue, and Inchyra Blue are popular accent colours, while Cornforth White, Purbeck Stone, and Skimming Stone work beautifully as neutrals throughout. We offer free colour consultations for all Maida Vale projects. Call 020 7101 3168 for a free quote.
