Preparing a nursery is one of the most exciting decorating projects in any West Hampstead NW6 home. It is also one where safety is paramount — newborns spend up to 16 hours a day in their nursery, breathing air that may contain paint fumes if the wrong products are used.
Non-Toxic Paint for Nurseries
We exclusively use zero-VOC and natural paints for nursery projects in NW6. Earthborn Claypaint is our top recommendation — it is EU Toy Safety certified, contains no VOCs, acrylics, or oils, and is virtually odour-free. The room can be occupied within hours of the final coat. Little Greene Intelligent Emulsion is another excellent option, carrying EU Ecolabel certification for minimal environmental and health impact.
Colour Psychology for Babies
Soft, muted tones create a calming environment for newborns. Popular nursery colours among our West Hampstead clients on Fairhazel Gardens, Greencroft Gardens, and Inglewood Road include pale sage greens, soft powder blues, and gentle warm neutrals. We advise against bright, stimulating colours on walls — these are better introduced through accessories that can be changed as the child grows.
Practical Nursery Decorating Tips
Use a wipeable eggshell finish on the lower half of walls and around the cot area — spillages and marks are inevitable. Paint the ceiling in a flat white to maximise light reflection from any nightlight. Ensure all furniture paint used on cots and shelving is EN71-3 certified for toy safety.
