Painters & Decorators in South Hampstead: The Red Brick Conservation Area

The South Hampstead Conservation Area — focusing on the grid of streets including Aberdare Gardens, Canfield Gardens, and Goldhurst Terrace — is defined by a very specific architectural type: the late Victorian red brick semi-detached or terraced house, often with terracotta detailing and distinctive Dutch gables. These properties have a visual warmth and weight that dictates a different decorating approach to the white stucco of Belsize Park.

External Decoration in South Hampstead

Use of white on exterior masonry is restricted in parts of South Hampstead to maintain the unity of the red brick streetscapes. External woodwork is traditionally painted in white or heavy cream to contrast with the brick, with front doors in deep heritage gloss colours (dark greens, blacks, and deep reds). Understanding these local conventions is essential for a successful exterior project here.

Interior Character

South Hampstead interiors are typically generous, with wide hallways and substantial original joinery. The dark mahogany or stained pine of the original balustrades and doors is often retained. We frequently work on schemes that lighten these interiors without destroying their character — using warm neutrals and soft greens that harmonise with the original warm wood tones rather than fighting against them with stark modern whites.
