Painting Bare Plaster in Hampstead NW3 — The Correct Approach

By David Miller11 March 20266 min read
Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Painting Bare Plaster in Hampstead NW3 — The Correct Approach

Newly plastered walls require a specific preparation sequence before any finish coat is applied. Get this wrong — as many DIY decorators and less experienced painters do — and the result is patchy finish, poor adhesion, and premature peeling. Our NW3 decorators complete this process correctly every time.

Curing Time

Fresh plaster must be allowed to cure properly before any paint is applied. New gypsum plaster needs a minimum of 4–6 weeks to dry completely (longer in cold or damp conditions). Painting too early traps moisture in the plaster, which then pushes the new paint off the wall. We always insist on a confirmed cure time before beginning decoration.

The Mist Coat

The first coat on bare, cured plaster must be a mist coat — emulsion diluted approximately 20% with clean water. This penetrates the porous plaster surface and binds it, providing a stable base for subsequent coats. We never apply undiluted emulsion as the first coat on bare plaster.

Subsequent Coats

After the mist coat, two full coats of the chosen finish paint are normally required on new plaster. New plaster absorbs significantly more paint than previously decorated walls, so material costs are approximately 30% higher. This is accounted for in our NW3 project quotations.
