Painting the Perfect Living Room in a Victorian North London Terrace

Freshly decorated interior room in a Hampstead property for Painting the Perfect Living Room in a Victorian North London Terrace

The front or double reception room of a North London Victorian terrace is where the architecture is at its most generous — the highest ceilings, the most elaborate cornicing, the grandest fireplace, and often the best natural light from a south or west-facing bay window. Getting the decoration right in this room transforms the entire feel of the house.

Starting with the Architecture

The starting point for any Victorian living room decoration scheme is the existing architectural features — the cornice profile, the fireplace surround material and colour, the woodwork details around the bay window. These elements anchor the room and the colour scheme should support rather than compete with them.

Wall Colour Selection

For Victorian living rooms, we most commonly encounter one of three colour strategies: a single all-room colour (most contemporary and the most commercially popular approach), a above/below dado rail division (classically two-toned — more formal, more period-authentic), or a feature chimney breast wall in a contrasting deeper tone with complementary neutral walls on the return walls.

Cornice and Ceiling Treatment

In NW3 Victorian reception rooms, the cornice is typically a substantial plasterwork moulding 50–150mm deep. We typically recommend: painting the cornice the same light tone as the ceiling if you want the ceiling to feel high and airy; painting the cornice in a slightly deeper tone between wall and ceiling colour if you want to define and celebrate it architecturally. Both approaches are valid — the first is more contemporary, the second is more period-authentic.
