Tadelakt is one of the most beautiful and technically demanding plaster finishes available. A traditional waterproof lime plaster originating from Morocco, it creates a seamless, softly luminous surface that is completely waterproof without any added sealant — making it ideal for showers, baths, and wet rooms in Hampstead NW3's most luxurious properties.
How Tadelakt Works
Tadelakt is a natural hydraulic lime plaster applied in thin layers and then polished with a smooth river stone (traditionally) or a specialist steel trowel. The final step is treatment with black soap — saponified olive oil — which reacts with the lime to create a surface that is both water-repellent and self-healing.
Tadelakt vs Venetian Plaster
Venetian plaster (marmorino) is not inherently waterproof and must be sealed for wet areas. Tadelakt is inherently waterproof through the polishing and soap treatment process. Both are breathable lime-based finishes, but Tadelakt is the correct choice for showers and steam rooms in NW3 properties.
Colours and Finishes
Tadelakt is available in a wide range of natural pigment colours — from warm limestone white through warm terracotta, grey-green, and rich ochre. The polished surface has a beautiful depth and slight sheen that reads differently in different lights throughout the day.
