Before modern emulsion paint arrived in the 1950s, virtually all interior walls in Hampstead NW3 Victorian and Edwardian properties were finished in either distemper (chalk-based) or limewash (lime-based). For properties wishing to restore authentic period finishes — or that have walls where modern paint simply will not adhere — these traditional products remain the right choice.
Soft Distemper
Soft distemper — chalk whiting, glue size, and pigment — was the standard interior wall finish for Victorian properties. It is extraordinarily beautiful in period rooms, with a velvety, chalky surface that has a quality no modern paint replicates. Its main limitation is that it cannot be washed — and it is incompatible with subsequent applications of modern emulsion (the weak bond between distemper and wall creates a problematic substrate).
Oil-Bound Distemper
Oil-bound distemper (sometimes called OBD) is a more durable version that can be washed gently. It was commonly used in Victorian hallways and stairs — areas needing more durability than soft distemper provides. Farrow & Ball's historic range draws heavily on the texture and finish of oil-bound distemper.
Dealing with Existing Distemper
If your NW3 period property has existing distemper on walls and you wish to apply modern emulsion, the distemper must be removed — which is a skilled, time-consuming process. We offer a full distemper removal, lime render repair, and modern redecoration service for NW3 homes.
