Painting Bay Windows in North London Victorian Properties: Inside and Out

Exterior decorating work on a North London property for Painting Bay Windows in North London Victorian Properties: Inside and Out

The projecting bay window is the signature external feature of Victorian and Edwardian North London terraces — present in the vast majority of the housing stock from Kentish Town through Crouch End and across to Finsbury Park and Highgate. It's also one of the most complex elements to paint correctly, involving multiple planes, different substrates (timber and masonry), and exposure to weather on three faces.

External Bay Window Painting

External bay windows on Victorian terraces typically have a timber frame and sash arrangement set within a brick or render surround. The timber elements — sill, sash frames, and surrounding casing — all require exterior primer, undercoat, and topcoat in sequence. We work with a Weathershield Exterior Eggshell or purpose-made exterior gloss on Victorian bay timbers — these resist the weathering cycle far better than interior products applied externally.

The Bay Window Internal Reveal

The internal reveal of the bay — the walls between the external plane and the main room — is one of the most characterful features of a Victorian North London interior. It creates a semi-separated alcove space that benefits from careful colour consideration: the same colour as the main room walls (for continuity), a slightly paler or warmer tone (to make it feel more light-filled and intimate), or even a contrasting wallpapered or painted finish (for a more deliberate decorative statement).

Window Board Treatment

The bay window board — the full-width timber shelf at the base of the bay — needs appropriate treatment. In occupied homes they're frequently used for books, plants, or display; they should be painted in a scrubable eggshell rather than flat emulsion, and in a colour that relates to both the wall colour and the floor finish beneath.
