Victorian and Edwardian North London properties contain a significant quantity of original metalwork — cast iron railings, wrought iron gates, basement area railings, balcony balustrades, and ornate fire escapes that are original to the property and in many cases irreplaceable. Maintaining this metalwork correctly is both a matter of preserving character and protecting the underlying material from corrosion.
Understanding Your Metalwork
Original Victorian railings and gates are typically cast iron (rigid, brittle, and prone to corrosion) or wrought iron (more flexible, with a characteristically layered structure visible at cut sections). Modern replacement sections are typically mild steel. Each material has slightly different behaviour and requires the same approach to preparation — though the key principle (removing all rust and applying a rust-inhibiting primer before any topcoat) applies universally.
The Correct Preparation Process
Wire brushing or needle-gunning to remove all loose rust and flaking paint, followed by treatment of remaining rust with a phosphoric acid rust converter, then application of a zinc-rich or epoxide primer before topcoat in the chosen colour. We apply the topcoat in an appropriate gloss or satin finish — gloss remains the traditional choice for Victorian ironwork and produces the most durable result, though satin can look more refined on more architecturally detailed pieces.
Conservation Area Metalwork
In conservation areas such as Hampstead and Highgate, original ironwork is a protected element of the street character. Any replacement sections must closely match the original in profile and detail — we can source reclaimed and reproduction period ironwork sections through specialist suppliers.
