Hampstead Garden Suburb NW11 is one of London's most remarkable residential areas — a planned community of Arts & Crafts houses designed by some of the early twentieth century's finest architects, including Raymond Unwin and Edwin Lutyens. Decorating these homes requires an understanding of both the architectural philosophy and the strict management guidelines that govern the Suburb.
The Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust
The Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust controls the external appearance of all properties within the Suburb's boundaries. Any external painting — including colour changes to front doors, window frames, fascias, and render — must be approved by the Trust before work begins. We have extensive experience navigating the Trust's application process and maintain an approved colour palette for different property types within NW11.
Approved External Colour Palettes
Properties along Hampstead Way, Meadway, and Wildwood Road each have their own approved colour schemes based on the original architect's intentions. Generally, external woodwork should be painted in muted heritage colours — sage greens, cream whites, and stone shades are typical. Bright or bold colours are almost always rejected. Render, where present, should be finished in approved lime-based or mineral paints.
Interior Decoration of Arts & Crafts Homes
Inside, Hampstead Garden Suburb homes feature beautiful craftsmanship — leaded-light windows, inglenook fireplaces, exposed timber beams, and hand-plastered walls. Our decorators use the Arts & Crafts palette of earthy greens, warm terracottas, and soft ochres to complement these features. Natural and breathable paints suit the original building materials perfectly.
