The streets surrounding Hampstead Heath — from the sweeping crescents of South End Road to the leafy avenues of East Heath Road — are lined with some of London's most magnificent Victorian and Georgian properties. Decorating these homes requires skill, knowledge, and deep respect for period craftsmanship.
Georgian Interiors: Simplicity and Proportion
Georgian homes near Hampstead Heath, particularly those on Downshire Hill and Keats Grove, are characterised by elegant proportions and restrained decoration. Walls were typically finished in flat distemper in muted stone colours. We replicate this effect using Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion or Little Greene Absolute Matt — low-sheen finishes that let the architecture speak for itself.
Victorian Exuberance
By contrast, High Victorian interiors on streets like Parliament Hill and Nassington Road embraced rich colour and pattern. Deep reds, bottle greens, and Prussian blues were fashionable for dining rooms and libraries. We work with homeowners to select period-appropriate palettes that feel authentic without being museum-like, using the specialist ranges from Mylands and Edward Bulmer.
Practical Considerations for Large Period Homes
Properties near Hampstead Heath tend to be substantial — often four or five storeys. Decorating these homes requires careful phasing so that families can continue to live comfortably during the work. We plan room-by-room schedules, using low-odour paints and dustless sanding systems to minimise disruption.
