The Challenge
A Grade II listed Georgian townhouse on Church Row, Hampstead needed its dramatic three-storey hallway and staircase redecorated. The property featured an original cantilevered stone staircase, ornate ironwork balustrades, and elaborate plasterwork on the stairwell ceiling. Working at heights of over 10 metres above the ground floor required specialist access solutions.
Key Challenges
Working at Height in Confined Space
A bespoke scaffold tower was required to safely reach the 10-metre ceiling while navigating the cantilevered staircase.
Listed Building Constraints
All materials and methods had to be approved for use in a Grade II listed building.
Our Solution
We constructed a bespoke internal scaffolding tower within the stairwell, designed to avoid contact with the delicate plasterwork and ironwork. The existing paint was carefully removed using steam methods appropriate for the lime plaster substrate. All cracks in the plasterwork were repaired with traditional lime plaster. The walls were finished in Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion in Pointing, and the elaborate ceiling plasterwork was picked out in All White. The stone staircase and ironwork were cleaned and treated. The wooden handrail was stripped and refinished in a rich mahogany stain with multiple coats of clear satin varnish.
